United Way of ECI says thanks to the community; one year after Great Flood ...

Dear Friends:
One year ago we collectively held our breath and hoped against hope that our homes, businesses, family and friends would somehow be spared from the looming disaster. Then we sat in silence and watched the flood ravage our communities and turn thousands of lives upside down.

Much has been written about the events of June 2008 and the massive challenge left behind as we continue to recover and rebuild. It is natural to experience a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings as we reflect on this somber anniversary. But it's also important to pause and consider the great way we've come together to help one another.

I am proud to have seen first-hand the teamwork of thousands of volunteers from around the country and the generosity of our friends and neighbors. We can all be thankful for the tireless work of our government officials, community leaders and nonprofit organizations; all doing their very best to restore things we'll never again take for granted.

Much remains to be done; and it will take all the determination, resilience and patience we have to overcome these obstacles. Still, the brightest future comes after the struggle through our darkest hour. Through sorrowful tears and grateful smiles we can see the recovery taking shape and our neighborhoods returning slowly to life.

On behalf of United Way of East Central Iowa I'd like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to everyone who has lent their support in this time of need. Whether you've given money to a flood recovery fund, volunteered to help clean out a flooded home, or advocated for funding support we so desperately need; you have made a difference to those in need.

United Way of East Central Iowa

Today's thank you from the United Way of East Central Iowa needs to be repeated to everyone. Our non-profit and faith communities have done an outstanding job in our flood recovery efforts so far here in Cedar Rapids. Progress has started, but there is a lot of work ahead for neighbors, small businesses, non-profits, the public infrastructure and all in our community.
